So, what "other things" need to be done when running power??

Also, I keep hearing that you really need to make sure the antenna is
grounded properly.  How is this done with a mag mount?  I guess the
grounding point would be where the coax connector hits the back of the
radio.  In this case, would the coax shielding provide the ground from
antenna to auto frame?

I'm about to get a mag-mount antenna and was wondering what the
installation of these entails. For example, would I have to scrape the
paint away from where I mag-mount it? Would I just run the coax through an
open window?

Thanks,
-Robert C.

You can mount the mag mount directly to the paint finish.  It would be better
if the mount comes with a *** boot.  You will probably have some paint
discolloration in any event but it doesn't happen as fast with a *** boot.
You can fish the coax through a door, most cars have a gasget with enough room
to not cripm the coax too badly.  Through a window is better if you can do it
without crimping the coax.  If you are going to run power you will need to do
some other things.  Let me know if I can help further.

Put the sandpaper away! The idea is to NOT scratch the paint. You just
don't know how much I wanted to say you should get some #40 rotary disks
and take the paint off down to bear metal, but I was good for a change.

Just say 'no'.

No need to scrape paint.  The best place to mount it is on the trunk
lid and put the coax into the trunk compartment, then feed it through
the backseat into the car itself.  This is not the actual best
location on the car, that it on the top in the center, but then you
have the problem of a wire running halfway over your car and in
through the door.  This will work but becomes a pain after awhile.
