replace am/fm antenna with cb/am/fm antenna?

Post by APS » Sat, 10 May 2003 10:21:26

Hello all,

I want to install an antenna for my cb in the place of the current
am/fm antenna. The rig is nothing special--a Uniden Pro 510--and I
don't need serious dx power. I just want to use it for traffic on the
occasional cross-state trips I take. I  don't want to add an antenna,
but I also don't want to use a magnet mount.

A. It seems that it doesn't much matter what kind of antenna I use for
am/fm. Can I just use a cb antenna and use a good splitter to connect
it to both the cb and radio? I'm envisioning a 4' or so coiled antenna.

B. Is there a ready-made adaptor to use a cb antenna in the stock
antenna mount? OR would I have to remove the current mount and use its
hole?

C. Anybody done this? What problems are likely?

Thanks in advance--

APS

Go to the URL below for a good discussion of the pro's and con's of
what you want to do. The rest is up to you.

There is a splitter you can get that will let you do
just that. I have on and it works "ok" but it does cut down on your
transmitting range but seems to recieve the same or near the same as a regular
antenna. I got it from JCWhitney Catolog it was about 20.00 I think.  It uses
your stock AM/FM antenna. you plug it and your CB into the splitter. There are
2 versions of this, one has a SWR light to help tune the radio and antenna
this is the one I have,  but the SWR's were still high so I still use a
antenna matcher to get the lowest SWR I can. overall it works for short range
and I really don't want to put a second antenna and drill holes in my brand
new truck. hope this helps , here is the number for JCWhitney 1-800-529-4486
