Calling CQ...oh please, oh please...

Post by Helene Maxwe » Sun, 10 Aug 1997 04:00:00

Immediately after obtaining my general license, and while still
required to use a temporary call sign identifier, I enjoyed a good
number of DX contacts using modest equipment (100 watts out of a vertical).

As soon as I stopped using the temporary identifier, responses to CQ calls
stopped almost completely.  Yes, the radio still works, although I had
started to wonder.  Yes, I've thought about pretending I was newly
licensed forever to solve the problem, but there must be a better solution.
I sure don't know what it is except more persistence than even the
marathon efforts I've made--  should I fake an accent to sound like
an *** contact?  (Just kidding) Thanks for any thoughts.

I think you would find that a lot of the folks you QSO'ed with didn't have
a clue what your /AG meant.  They probably thought it was some ***
portable designation.

Sounds to me that you should listen for and reply to CQ's.  Folks did
it for you so you can return the favor - and make contacts, too.

Well Helene,
I would imagine that your "temporary identifier" there in the USA has
some sort of obscure callsign and therefore you would no doubt attract
a lot of prefix hunters or people who like to "collect" QSO's with
station using unusual callsigns. There are many out there that spend
hours looking for and trying to log odd prefix callsigns like special
event satations often use... As a matter of interest, what was your
temporary identifier"?
