Have any of you attempted converting existing 49 mhz walkie-talkies,
cordless phones, etc. to 6-meters? I have an urge to give 6-meters
a try, but don't want to spend big $$$.

On a related note: Are there any inexpensive 6-meter transmitter/
receiver/tranceiver kits out there? What modes are most common (AM,
SSB, CW, FM)? Is very-low-power operation practical?

6 meters cheap
ingredients:
ratshack TRC-505 $29.95
jan xtal - 1 rec, 1 xmit crystal $11 each
(tell them same specs as TRC-501)
minor coil tweeking

results:
hot receiver for the price
so-so auto squelch (ripe for experimentation)
miserably low power out (also ripe for experimentation)
lotso fun!

Awhile back someone posted the results of such an attempt. They
were using a set of baby monitors. In the case of the baby monitors,
all that was required was to replace the crystal. Bob Parness (I
think) later posted some instructions on how to convert baby monitors
to 6-meters.

I once took an AM supergenerative toy walkie talkie and replaced the 49MHz
crystal to 50.585MHz. That freq was a crystal laying around in the junk
box. Took it over to a ham friend's house, who had a 6M and 2M rig
set up to do cross repeat. Had a QSO with the toy cross repeated to a
2M repeater to a random ham. Took a while to explain the equipment.

Should also be possible to make 10M toys by recrystaling old toy CB
talkies.
