mag-mount 2M antenna

Post by Ralph J. Gabl » Thu, 17 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I need a mag-mount 2M antenna.  Being on a VERY limited budget I have
decided to try to convert an old CB mag-mount antenna into a mag-mount
2M antenna rather than pay the $150 for a commercially made one.
Antennas have never been my forte', so I am asking for some help here.
How to I design the base loading for a mag-mount antenna?  Any info that
you can give me is appreciated.

Oh yes, I DO have toroidal cores and the stuff to wind coils with.

The other option is if there is someone with a used mag-mount antenna
that they are willing to part with at a price I can afford.

Ralph,

If you cut the whip length down to 19" you won't need ANY kind of matching
network, just hook the coax to the whip. It ain't elegant, but it works fine.
Coax should be RG58.

Commercially made 5/8 wave mag mount antennas for two meters can be
purchased for much less than 150 bucks. For example, TechAmerica has one on
page 637 of their catalog for $29.95. Quarter-wave mag mount antennas can be
found for considerably less than that.

I have used Radio Shack mag mount for 2 meters (5/8ths) and done very well
with it.  I go 80 mph on highway with no problems.  Used 2.5 watt HT to hit
local repeaters and for local repeaters while traveling through New England.
Had good qso's and guidance to locations I requested on the repeaters.
