Advice on BC-8500XLT wanted.

Post by johnso.. » Sat, 07 May 1994 08:11:27

I am interested in getting into scanning and am looking into buying one before
buying one is declared illegal ;-). Looking in the Winter "Amateur Radio
Catalog" I noticed the BC-8500XLT, but the catalog doesn't explain much about
it. If anyone out there has any experience or knowledge about this unit that
might help me in my search, I would appreciate it if you would post it or
e-mail it to me. Also, how does it compare to the Pro-2006? What mods are
possible? Is there a better scanner in the $400-450 price range?

Go with the 2006.  The importation/manufacture cutoff date was April 26, so
all that is left in the stores is stock-on-hand (or in the warehouse).

The 8500 is not a bad scanner, but in Provo/Orem you'll have intermod problems
from the pagers. Also I have not seen any mod yet to open cellular.

Thanks for the advice. I got a couple of helpful e-mail messages, too, and the
choice is clear--I just ordered the Pro-2006 from Marymac (800-231-3680). They
have modifiable 2006's in stock going for $345. That includes a one year
warranty. No sales tax on out-of-state shipments (I think they're in Texas).

I hope my wife approves!
