  The problem you're encountering is 'intermod' (intermodulation), where
several strong local signals mix in the receiver and produce interference.
The signals you're hearing are most likely from the 152 MHz common carrier
band (pagers and conventional mobile telephones).
  The Pro-43's triple conversion is not much help, as the signals are
entering through the case and mixing in the 3rd I.F. This has been noted
in the 160 MHz railroad band by a number of Pro-43 users. What is unusual
is that you're hearing these FM mix products when using the AM detector.
I suspect you're quite close to an older paging/phone tower.
