I have an Opto 456 and run it with an ancient Toshiba T-1000 using
ScanStar.  Basic version, not the Pro version.  I usually run it while
I'm working on my desktop, and since my desktop machine didn't have any
more Rs-232 ports I drug the T-1000 out of the closet, dusted it off, and
got the nicads going again, and it works perfectly.  Also it can go along
if I decide to try to run the Pro-2006 from my car.
The only problem I had was installing a little clip onto one of the IC's
in the Pro-2006, the clip was very long and when I tried to put the lid
on.  Trying to solder this lead without the clip caused other problems.
But, in fairness, other people have got the thing together and managed to
bend this clip down without it hopping off.
But to answer your question, ScanStar standard version should run on
about anything you have with a spare 232 port.

FYI... First I hook the clip onto the legs of the IC about 30 degrees
from the circuit board. Second make sure the clip doesn't short out other
pins of the IC. Last, I hot glued the clip right to the RF tight metal
case, right next to the IC. That will not come off even when you shake
the 2006.
