Newbie: Radio Shack Scanner Loader software doesn't work on Windows XP

Post by Nick » Sun, 07 Mar 2004 11:09:55

I have a Radio Shack PRO-89 race scanner and the Radio Shack Scanner Loader
software.

I have the software installed on Windows XP and Windows 98 (I can boot
either OS on my system).  Everything works perfectly on Windows 98.
Everything *seems* to work on Windows XP except that it won't actually
upload frequencies to the scanner. The only requirements listed on the CD
are "Windows 95 or later".

I downloaded ProLink software and it loads the scanner correctly on XP.
The only reason that I mentioned that is because to me it proves that there
is nothing wrong with my hardware or XP.

I e-mailed Radio Shack and just got a reply that they know the software
doesn't work on XP. According to RS the software "does not access the serial
port properly and cannot therefore send data to the scanner". They went on
to say that "We do not have a version of this software which will work with
[Windows XP]".

Does anyone here know of a workaround or any way to get the software to work
on XP?  If not, what software (free?) do you recommend.

Thanks,
Nick

Have you considered upgrading your OS to Windows 95 ?

If you haven't already tried it, try running the program in "Windows
Compatibility Mode".  You can choose from a number of windows versions,
including 98 and 95...

Yes I tried every combination of compatibility mode options that I could
find. Nothing worked.

Thanks,
Nick

LOL.  As I mentioned I have my PC setup to dual boot, because of things like
this. But, no, I do not want Win95, I'll take Win98SE.  ;)

Interesting. I haven't ever tried that.  Is there any special setup
required?

I have my PC set up to run Win98SE under XP.

I believe he is talking about running it as a dual boot system.  This does
require special setup.  I would require a minimum of type partitions on the
hard drive, one for each operating system...  It might also be possible to
use two separate hard drives, but I have never tried that myself, so I can't
really say for sure.

If you want more info, search the net, or the Microsoft Knowledge Base for
information on "dual boot" systems, or similar terms...

I had already mentioned that I have a dual boot system now.  I think that he
understood that, and was bringing up another option.  But the only way that
I know of to run Win9x inside WinXP is by using VirtualPC or an equivalent.
