Just purchased a VR-5000

Decent radio.

The so-called "Owners Manual" is close to worthless.

Doesn't even tell how to delete a memory channel or change memory banks.

Anyone have a VR-5000.  What do you think?

I am very close to getting one. We should all stick together so we can
share things that are not spoken about in the manual, I am sure there
are many.... How close do you live to strong AM broadcast bands. And
does it overload between 600Khz and 1.7 Khz. The Tunable RF front end
apparently only works between 1.8 Mhz and 900 Mhz. That tuned RF front
end is a very nice feature.. Similar to my FT-1000 MP Mark V radio...
The band scope is very nice... Have you checked out any of the VR-5000
internet web sites? I think Strogsignals has a few links to several. One
person even has  a demo with the DSP feature. Did  you get DSP or Voice
Recorder.. And last may I ask who you purchased it from, if new what $$$
was it? I think a good deal is around $850.00???

Robert:  Thanks for reply.  I live close to City.  Overload on 1100 AM.
Tower is close.  I will play with it and hope for correction.
No DSP or Recorder.
I purchased over the Net from Javiation in England.  $900.00 US
Received in TWO Days, no problem.  European Model.

So far I like it.  even without instructions.

Dentul,,, Robert...
I bought one about 6 weeks ago and I couldn't agree with you both any more
if I tried...... The manual is a damned joke isn't it? We must stick
together and share the operating procedures of this modern wonder of radio
technology..... I am sure we all benefit from our mutual exchanges, I know
I will....
Don't get me wrong either - I am full of constructive criticisms on this
receiver but I do like it.  Would you agree with me that it is probably the
neatest, meanest looking scanner/receiver around (I think it is)?

I can't delete any memory channels either or change memory banks. I can't
even create 'banks" of memories yet, say 50 banks of 40 mems or 20 banks of
100 mems. There are 2 existing default banks waiting for memory channels to
be entered in them but don't ask how to create more. I wish I could. I
don't fancy having up to 2000 memories in the one bank, a bit of an
overkill isn't it? I mean, just imagine getting from mem 001 to 1000. Yet,
looking at the LCD display and moving my face from side to side, I can just
make out that there "isn't" a place for a third or fourth numeral for the
memory channel numbers, there are only 2 places which suggests that
channels can only go from 00 up to 99 => then what? How do you enter into
memory channel number 100+ or 1000+? I don't see that one in the manual
anywhere...
I thought the Up & Down arrow keys just below and to the left of the main
tuning knob were used to change from one bank to another. I haven't tried
yet because until I can actually create more of these banks, I can't change
to/from them.
I think you can only "mask" a memory channel at this stage, by the book
that is,, but masking and deleting are 2 different things.
I have emailed Yaesu for any help on the manual and its shortcomings but
have received no reply.

It is a good receiver once you have set it up but that menu system is a bit
annoying and yet it looks as if it can do way, way more than either the
manual or the programming procedures suggest.

I will keep my eyes open for your guys AND if you have any problems or
questions, don't hesitate to ask - I will ask you guys if I have any
problems....
Cheers......

I don't have one yet but hope to soon. Have you called Yaesu customer
service yet?? These folks are VERY GOOD and probably the best when it
comes to these types of issues. They may have a supplemental publication
dealing with the memory issue. just call them or email them.. They are
your best friend. I will call them today and ask some questions as
well..

Hmmm - Well you see, the trouble is that I live in New Zealand. I emailed
one of the customer support (or was it "sales" ?) at www.yaesu.com or
thereabouts, ohhhh it must have been about 4 - 5 weeks ago now. Still no
reply.....  I will go check again for another email address.....
Can you find/give me an exact email address. I don't particularly care what
country it's in as we don't really have a genuine Yaesu dealership here. We
have a type of franchise holder for the brand but he/they only deal in
importing and selling the gear, along with the many other brands in their
shop. They seem to be sure that the manual is adequate, at least for their
shop floor model.

Having owned this set for the past 6 weeks now, I am really getting to like
it. For some reason, all it's shortcomings seem to be fading into obscurity
and all the good points are getting better, in my eyes. The menu thingy is
still an impending danger area though, hahahahaha...

Thanks for going out of your way..... much appreciated.
