Hi,

Can anyone tell me what a good antenna would be for this scanner out in Long
Island New York? I just bought this 780xlt and would like to pick up much
better reception. If you know of any websites or actual stores where I can go
and buy onte that would be great!
Also, is there soemthing that I can get to better program in channels and
text into this machine?

Hi
May I suggest http://www.grove-ent.com/hmpgmt.html for starters. From
that page you can get to Bob Grove Enterprises. They offer a wide range
of products for scanner listeners. They also have software that will
let you program and play with this radio much more quickly. In
addition, the 870 has its own users group on Yahoo, that you may find of
assistance.
On Long Island an outside antenna will help in picking up signals.
Being relatively flat and surrounded by water the 780 will grab a lot of
signals.

Radio Shack sells a discone antenna that does a good job. As for
software, try this:

http://www.butel.nl

That's the source for ARC780, a decent program with a free demo
and cheap purchase price.

Also don't forget about the feedline (coax) this is where most people lose.
They get a good antenna and put it high then buy cheap coax. I wouldn't use
anything less than RG-213 or something better.
