You got it- all the public safety agencies around here converted to
encrypted trunked. (which they are having a lot of trouble getting to work
like the vendor claimed it would.) Not much on conventional VHF/UHF around
here any more. The ten-call-a-day users have all switched to cell  phones,
and I don't have much interest in listening to taxi dispatchers and mall
rentacops. Next garage sale, most of the scanners are going bye-bye.

Yeah, I recall some of those. Have a couple older Regency radios downstairs
by my bench, not to mention some of their MCA units and others.

Thats a shame! Well - if your choice is to start ditching - offer them here
or Rec.Radio.Swap - first - maybe someone will take interest.

What area is this? There aren't all that many encrypted digital trunk
systems out there. Are you sure it's just no APCO25?

I used to read an hour or two before going to sleep every night, and listen
to cell phones with my headphones on while I was doing so.
Plenty of cell phone sex, heated arguments, threats, spouse cheating,
crimes being planned and committed, drunks actually crashing while talking
on the phone, and lots more.
Plenty of boring ones also - Thats why they put search keys on scanners.
All and all pretty entertaining.

I've owned a total of two Regency scanners, one was a HX-1000, a great
railband radio. If they had updated it with a AA batt option, along with
the extra channels they did, it would have been a killer. Sadly, they
kept using the annoying NICD pack that had a short life instead.

The other was an HX-2000, complete with crunching squelch, and lousy
audio, and 20KHZ 800 MHZ stepping. Non standard antenna connector too.
Horrible.

Never had a base or mobile Regency scanner, but worked on a lot of them,
I bought mostly Bearcats until the Pro-2004 came out, and then very few
Uniden built radios after that, except for the BC9000XLT I had for many
years.

Southwest MI, Calhoun county. All the local PDs have jumped on the State of
MI 800 digital trunked system, and they all decided to run encrypted from
the get-go. Fire will switch as soon as they line up funding. Trouble is,
they only have 2 local towers, so coverage is very spotty. It was even
written up in the local paper, although the paper never reported on what
sort of fix they came up with. I happen to manage a vanilla vhf system used
in an office building, with a repeater in the mechanical room on the roof. I
keep expecting another repeater to magically appear up there, seeing as how
the landlord doesn't keep us in the loop on these things, and the building
is the tallest thing on that side of town.

If they were running in the clear, I'd spring the 500 bucks for the RS (GRE)
or Bearcat? scanner that can decipher the system. Looking at the online
listings, at least a third of the subscribers to this statewide system are
running encrypted, including pretty much everyone within 40 miles of here.

aem sends...

Too bad. I wonder why they went encrypted? Don't want anyone to hear
them ordering Pizza? One of the local PDs used to go voice inversion to
do just that.

Hilarious.

Is this group dead.    I just joined it

Is Radio Shack Abandoning the Scanner Radio Market?

If it does not look like a cell phone, smell like a cell phone, or work
like a cell phone, the ***shack is not much interested in it.

No wonder their sales are in the crapper. Cramer says avoid the stock
even when the price pulled way back.

The management is running it into the hole. They lost many of their
customers because they lost their direction.

There is really nothing in their stores I want anymore. Real shame, they
had such potential and threw it all away.

You do recall the old saying don't you? All good things must end sometime.
Or something to that effect!

Is Radio Shack Abandoning the Scanner Radio Market?

Radio Shack used to be like Disneyland to me by browsing in their stores
and looking through their catalog at home, but I've got no use for them
anymore. As much money as I've given to Radio Shack over the years and
the way they've forgotten about us radio hobbiests, I don't care if all
their stores dry up and blow away.

As far not having anything to listen to on scanners as there once was,
I've listened  to high altitude aircraft since 1974. I've got no
shortage of radio comms to keep me entertained on a daily basis and it
requires no trunking equipment to be able to listen to it.

Well, that's true, but I wouldn't really want not to listen to the local
PDs and other PS stuff. I see the new GRE digitals are coming soon, a
little over a month for the handheld, and the base/mobile for Xmas.
I will grab a PRO 2096 when they close them out, since the only base
scanner I have right now is my 21 year old Pro-2004. It works fine,
except for it's age and lack of new modes.

Universal has a nice ad for the new GRE radios:

I wonder if RS will even carry them? RS is pitiful compared to what it
was 20 years ago, let alone about the time they bought Allied. Allied
and Lafayette were so great in the late 60's and early 70's, Bernstein-
Applebee too, where I had a charge account at the age of 14!! I bought a
lot of stuff at the B-A store at the nearby mall, they used to have a
ton of discontinued Panasonic and Pioneer stuff, brand new in the box
for insanely cheap prices. I was about to buy a bearcat handheld (Xtal)
scanner from them when they went down the tubes and were gone. Lafayette
went about 5 years or so later. And then there were the local places
that had some great stuff, insanely overpriced. One place here wanted
FOUR TIMES the price RS wanted for the same tubes I needed for an old
radio I was fixing up for a friend's dad. No wonder they went under too.
One of the local places was owned by a relative of mine, and when he got
sick before he died, he sold it to a young guy and his wife, who put it
under a couple years later, mostly because he started getting into
musical instruments and electronics. Too bad.
