RS closed 100's of stores and I can get very little out of my
unblocked MK3 any more, so it would make sense.

The market (like this group) is DEAD, because the joys of scanning (as
we all once knew it) is FINISHED.

What the hell are you drinking? My Pro 96 picks up all the local action,
and I don't see how scanning could be much better than now, and I've
been listening since the Little Tiger days.

There are some agencies who have converted their systems to digital which
can cost tens of millions of dollars depending on size. Uniden came out with
the BCD396T which will pick up digital as long as it's not encrypted.

Many of the larger public agencies are using computers in their mobile units
to communicate without using voice.

I weighed this issue before buying new scanners and I figure we have quite
some time before the digital age takes over public communications
completely.

If you feel it's dead, it's because you must be very limited to the com
systems still out there.

Yeah, all the inconsequential action.

That could very well be, and satisfaction depends on what you want out
of your radio, but I can see no valid reason for buying a new scanner
today ... especially the ones castrated by FCC fascism. I managed to
acquire a brand new full coverage MK3 in 2004 thinking I landed the
prize of a lifetime, but if I could get half of what I paid for it, I
sell it tomorrow.

Oh, like the chases, both car and foot, I hear almost every night? Like
the shots fired calls I hear once a week or so?

So I don't hear as much plate running as I used to. THAT's
inconsequential.

So what exactly aren't you hearing any more that was really interesting?

LOL, cellphones? Well, that's a boat that's sailed, and never coming
back. My 2004 does fine on all the PS and RR stuff I listen to.

Cell calls were hilarious, but there was more to listen to than that.

I found that the novelty of monitoring cellphones wore off rather quickly

There is "tons" of stuff to hear on my scanner - here. Admittedly - there
are "some" quiet times - and others - you sort of wish they'd shut up - but
you don't dare turn it off or the volume down.

Cell phones - are boring - to me. I could care less what others are talking
about. It's none of my concern or business. I am not listening for "private"
information - either. When I "did" have a cell phone capable scanner - I
heard lots of ***s - the exchange something to this effect - "Hi - Hi!
Whatcha doing? Nothing whatchu doing? Nothing..... What's going on? Nothing,
you? Nothing! You going out partying tonight? I am. Yeah - I am too..... And
shortly the conversation would end with equal exchanges of same
questions/remarks. BORING.............. A waste of cell time and money - in
my opinion. I hate when people call me on mine just to ask stupid questions
or tell me things I could care less about. Especially - when they could tell
me later in person - as if I'm yet interested.  The other calls I witnessed
were arguments, contractor calls, etc. All ***(to me) - I could live
without.

Just my 2 cents.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes. But I do have to wonder what is
going on with people who say there isn't anything to listen to
"anymore". My scanner is almost nonstop action 24/7/365. The only
negative compared to the "old days" is the fact I don't have an insane
amount of radios, in case a huge disaster happens. A few times over the
years, I have had a dozen scanners and receivers going all at once,
keeping track of everything that was happening.

Now I'm down to three, soon to be four.

Yeah, you're right......... I guess my point is, I'm not one to "talk" on a
phone so - could care less when people are talking - for me to care to
listen. Their chatter is boring. I mean - even cordless phone - old ladies
exhanging recipies and so on. WHO CARES! The Scanner provides way too much
to listen to.

I am involved in many positions here - which is why I don't dare turn my
scanner down. It is "usually" busy - but some days it seems the shit hits
the fan and there is so much going on - it is hard to keep up with it all. I
monitor 2 other counties aside from my own - as often things there - unfold
for us here.

Seriously, people must have been talking about totally different stuff
where you are. There was some amazingly great stuff.

I lived in Las Vegas when the MGM Grand Hotel burned, and I had every
single scanner and tunable PSB radio I had listening to it. My "big"
scanner was a Bearcat 210, and as soon as I found a busy freq, I tuned
one of my old "Monitoradios" that was sitting in the closet until then
to it..I sure wish I had one 200 channel scanner then, it sure would
have made it easier.

My girlfriend at the time got hooked on scanning that day. Every so
often, she asks me if she needs an upgrade, and when it's time, buys it,
and a friend of mine programs it for her. The older scanner is moved to
her kid's bedroom, she's hooked too.

That is so cool - your girl friend is hooked! Most women don't go for that
stuff. I got a BC 210 or two down in my heap pile now....... They were nice
to have back then. I can't recall having a "Monitoradio" - however - I have
seen them. I do have a Realistic Tuneable receiver - covering a PSB band or
two.
It has a crystal socket or two also - in case you want to make it rock
bound.

My Ex-GF, sadly. Her dad hated me so much that about the time we were
about to get engaged, we had to break up. He liked the loser that she
ended up marrying, until he cheated on her, and gambled a ton of money
away. Then I wasn't so bad, I guess. She's single now, with a kid in
college and sometimes I think I will go back to Vegas to see what
happens with her. You never know.

You might not be old enough to have been around when the Monitoradios
were really common. I bought about 20 of them at garage sales and
hamfests from about 1968 to 1978. Most were retired after I bought my
Bearcat III, the rest were put into the closet when I bought my 210 for
40 bucks! Some guy lost his ******, and needed money to drive
home. It was 2 weeks old, and I got everything but the mobile bracket.

The monitoradios are long gone now. The heat they threw off was insane,
and with about 12 of them running at once, plus a TV, a couple of
crystal scanners, and the 210, my bedroom got hot as hell within
minutes. We didn't care. We had a few of them on an extension cord to
keep from tripping the breaker.

Nice looking one that was recently sold:
