I am in need of a high gain receive only antenna for the 40-50Mhz range (a
dipole or beam would be fine)

How about a 6 meter antenna? They are optimized for 50-54 MHZ (6 meter ham
band), but should perform fairly well at 40 MHZ for recieve.
