Rob: About the only way an R.S. Discone will beat what you're Useing now
below 100 mehz. is if the coax has become disconnected.--- Discones , (
even with the loaded vertical ) just don't hear well  down
 in those Freqs.
I checked the net for the answer for guite a while with same results
you're getting "bout 50/50 got some
replys as complicated as quantum physics,
PLAIN TRUTH IS  THEY DON'T HEAR VERY GOOD ON LOW FREQS

Rob,

I have several antennas: a RS discone, a 2-meter Ringo Ranger, a converted
TV antenna, a homemade 49Mhz ground-plane, and a multi-band wire dipole.  I
have found the discone to be terrible on cordless phones.  The dipole isn't
much better.  I found the 2-meter antenna suprisingly good on 49 Mhz.  I
then built a vertical ground-plane antenna specifically for those
frequencies, and it does a little better than the Ringo Ranger.  A TV
antenna is also pretty good, as long as you mount it with the elements
vertical as apposed to horizontal, since the frequencies you will be
receiving are vertically polorized.  Also, any antenna made for the
six-meter ham band should work well, although I have yet to try that.

: All I want to receive is the 49Mhz cordless freqs.

Just remember that listening to cordless conversations IS against federal
law in the USA.

: I own a older 2032 and I have taped to a PVC vent pipe on the roof now
: the RS (20-006) 9 section telescoping whip. I think the rain and snow
: has started to corrode it so now I want to put a new antenna in the
: attic.

: I have searched Deja for an hour and for every person that says the RS
: discone is good, another person says avoid it. Same with the scantenna
: and every other one.

The RS discone is not terribly effective on 49 Mhz.
Adding the center whip to it does help a bit, but the performance will
still be so-so.

: Is there ANY agreement to what antenna is best for the 49 MHz cordless
: freqs?

A vertical dipole should do well-variants of dipoles should be good
too(J-pole antennas come to mind here).

: Should I replace the 50' of coax too? (its about 2 weathered years old
: now).

: WHo is in the know that can tell the REAL story about the proper
: antenna?

: TIA

Keep in mind that if you are using a Discone, it is NOT DC Grounded!!  You will
need to put a Blitz Bug in the coax cable for that antenna to be legally
grounded.  Same thing with a wire dipole antenna which is also not DC Grounded.
If you hear a clicking sound coming from your radio when its lightening or
even windy outside, its an electrical charge sparking inside your radio looking
for a ground and its finding one.  Thus the "clicking sound".  ->Dan
