Is there some way to enter a frequency directly into a RS 2006 without
first assigning a channel number? I can't seem to get it!

Not that I've found.  I'd be interested as well...

I guess a long way about it would be to make it a limit search with the
frequency as both the high and the low limit.  Then you could save it as
a monitor channel.  Then maybe transfer it to a bank channel.

Not a real timesaver :)

Not to my knowledge, but I usually use channel 1 as a 'scratchpad
channel' so I don't have to find an empty one.  I lock it out when I'm not
using it.

I just hit 'program', 'limit', the 'freq', then 'enter'.

You can use the scan limit (I reserve scan bank 0) memory for entering a
frequency without using a memory.

yes, but you may want to just set aside channel 1 for this task.
then if you use a timer to turn on the scanner, it 'wakes up'
on the channel you want (lock out 2-39 for this special task).
i suppose you could do a mod so the radio comes on not scanning.
