Battery Care?

Battery Care?

Post by K » Tue, 31 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I have a BC200XLT and need a new battery for it.. A question is how do
I care for it to make it last longer.

By keeping it plugged in all the time hurt the battery?
Should I complete drain it before recharging it?
Where do I get one.. No stores local carry them?

Thanks for any helpful tips..

if your going to use a rechargeable battery such as a NiCad then YES you
must drain them completely down atleast once a month to prevent memory
from forming in the battery. Then charge it up using a slow charger like
one that take 16 hours.  Do not over charge the batteries it will cause
them to have less life expectancy..There are also places to get
batteries from that will allow you to buy the parts to them and just
replace the guts of them.

here is one of them.

Battery Care?

When i ordered my 235xlt, I was somewhat concerned about the
"proprietary" rechargable pack it uses.

Folks, this isn't the least bit proprietary. Call me back and tell me
about proprietary when they release something akin to the fully molded
packs on Yaesu HT's.

Has anybody else considered the possibility of getting some Li-Ion AA's
and some heatshrink tubing and making a longer lasting, friendlier
version of Uniden P/N BP-180? Or even NiMH?

Uniden sells those batteries at a decent price (less than $30) on their web
site.  I just purchased one myself.  try www.uniden.con.

The best hint I can give you is to just use the scanner and keep it
charged up.  There are many who would argue that it is better to run
it down periodically before recharging, but then you'll have a
discharged battery possibly at a time that you wish you could use the
scanner.

If you treat a NiCad well, you'll get 24 months use out of it.  If you
treat it poorly you will get two years.  ...plus or minus some
depending on how much it gets used.

Replacing that 30 dollar battery every two years amounts to about
$1.25 per month.
