Greetings Group,

I received my BC250D digital scanner. It handles our Motorola Astro system
quite well.
It's nice to be able to monitor the police again. If anyone in the NG is
using one please comment on the
speaker that is built into this radio. I don't know if it is just mine but,
the speaker is crap. It is distorted at anything
over the minimum volume for normal listening. It is next to impossible to
hear when in a vehicle. I have resorted to using
headphones most of the time but, this is not a satisfactory solution. One
would think that for $370.00 that a better
speaker would be included with the unit. Do any of you know of available
mods or replacement speakers?

Thanks and regards
Mark

Man, that sounds bad...pay  almost $400 for radio and speaker sounds like
crap...
Might be a defective speaker? Did you contact the place you bought it from?

There have been a slew of programming-type fixes for crummy audio... and
one "hardware" mod (using a paperclip to short the spkr jack to the
antenna base (really!) on the StrongSignals.net board at

Never buy the first units of a new model.
I'll give you %50 bucks for it.

The one I played with at the Ft Wayne hamfest didn't sound too good
either, kind of a cross between a BC245 and my old RS Pro-26.  I'm sure
there will be a better speaker that will fit in there, just wait a while
and someone will do it and post about it.  I wasn't impressed with the
250 much at all, but I haven't been impressed with a Uniden handheld
since the original TT came out a few years ago.

I remember when Uniden first introduced the BC100. The worlds first
programmable handheld scanner.  I bought one and it did suck!  Reception on
42 MHz was mixed with a whine sound.  They did let me send mine back and
have it refurbished with the newest design and that did correct most
problems.  I still have the thing.  16 channels and the slowest lcd you have
ever seen!!

So maybe the 250D is the same way.  Let the bugs work out and then get one.

When I'm in a vehicle, I use a cassette adapter that pops into a
cassette stereo, it has a 3' cord with a stereo miniplug.  This fits
perfectly into the earphone jack of my BC235 (which was stolen last fall
:-(   The sound & volume is much better when played through my stereo.
Maybe the BC250D can be listened to in the same manner.

I agree, I have a radio shack amplified speaker in my work truck (van) and it
doesn the job very well.  I think the original poster may have a bad unit as
anywhere else the audio from my 250 is average (as scanners go).  I have no
problems while walking or while at home hearing my 250.. And most of all, if
its a matter of hearing your local systems or not hearing them at all, Ill take
it..

That is how I listen to my Pro-93! It works GREAT! And when not using it
to listen to the scanner, I can use the adapter to listen to my mp3s!

I installed an AM/FM CD radio that has an AUX input.  I hook the AUX input
to my scanner and have the
sound coming out my the truck speakers, it sounds great.   The AM/FM CD
radio has a button the select
from AM/FM radio to CD to AUX.  If you going to install an AM/FM radio, look
for one that has an AUX input.

Ditto,

I bought the first BC2500 batch and sent it back within 4 months because it
drained the battery pack overnight.... turns out they had a "problem" with
the first batch of units and repaired mine... also had another problem with
very noisy audio that they repaired also.....

Then there was the AOR 1500 that picked up local TV chan 7 on just about
every channel (above 800mhz) that was programmed in, turned out they had the
3rd IF frequency set for approx 180mhz........ another first batch
bunch.....

I took a chance on the BC 245 "after" I watched the BC235 come out with no
EDDACs ....... the only complaints I had were Uniden must have the market
cornered on NiCd battery packs and their LCD can't be read unless the radio
is tilted "back".....

Needless to say I got tired of waiting for they BC250D and went with a
PRO95...... the display has adjustable contrast and the unit takes AA
batteries...... it may not track the APCO25 systems but in all other aspects
it meets the BC250D

.....and the speaker volumn and clarity is 100x superior to the BC250D......
UNIDEN wake up!!!!!!!... did I mention it only costs $150......... it's off
sale now and goes for $250.....

enjoy

Fred
