Static buildup on mag-mount antenna

Static buildup on mag-mount antenna

As long as you're not driving a Corvette or other fiberglass vehicle, it
should cause you no problems at all...it's no doubt grounded thru the magnet
mount to the body anyway -- or, thru the coax to the radio's ground (though
THAT's a tenuous connection).

I've never had a problem in 30+ years with mag mounts.

Harry

I will be going across the country and have chosen to use a magnet-mount
antenna. I am wondering if there will be a static build-up problem, and
if so, how to reduce it.

I've never had a known static problem and I've worked the world with
various mag mounts.  The key to mobile installations is grounding.  If
you achieve a "good" ground then all is well.  If not, then you will
have problems with transmitting (and watch that computer in the car!!).
If you are just receiving then no problem and the car roof makes a
great groundplane.

-- The problem with "mag mounts" is they have no ground except what they get
with the magnet! An old ham (who is actually younger than I am) said run a
ground wire from the frame of the car to the  pl-259 connector after it's
connected to the radio using a heater hose clamp to attach the wire. I have
used this method and it also has the added benefit of less noise and a better
receive.
