Portable Scanner Recommendation?

Post by jdan.. » Fri, 09 Dec 1994 01:59:43

I want to get a portable (handheld) scanner that can receive:

    - Air band
    - 800mhz (cellular has to be restorable)

And the big one:   Cheap.

I have seen adds for the Realistic stuff.  I owned a Pro2004
for a long time and loved it.  Are their handhelds as good?

Thanks!  Jeff

As with all things you get what you pay for, so the "and cheap" part I
cannot help with. As for the other recommendation, lay down your cash
and get a BearCat 2500 if you can still find one. They are modifieable.
To cover the 800 MHz band, the new 3000's will have this band blocked.
Dealers are allowed to sell the remaining 2500's but after they're gone
they're gone. Act quickly to avoid being limited.

Wrong, BC2500XLTs made this year are NOT modifiable. Only BC2500XLTs
datecoded "OLIC" (12/93) or earlier are modifiable.

I've had the Pro-43 for a year or so and thoroughly enjoy it.  Even more
interesting with the cell-band/30-88Mhz band mod.  (Remove D4 and move it
to D3 slot to engage both enhancements.  This additive for those who may
not be aware.)

Yes, they're pretty good, if you like dealing with Rat Shack <G>

Seriously, though. The PRO-46 is a good scanner. It's restorable, with
800 MHz public saftey, and civilain air craft band. No Military air.
It's a 100 channels. You ought to be able to pick one up for about
$180.00 on sale.

I like my Pro-46.  It has covers lots of frequencies and is easy to modify
for cellular (2-9-L/O).  My only wish about it is that it should have more
channels.  It comes with 100 but I need about 400...

Also add date code OEIC as the BC2500XLT that I just bought scans the
entire 800Mhz band no prob.

Like I said, OLIC or before (includes OEIC) would be modifiable.
