Golly Dan, earlier YOU WROTE...

Dan,

I would be the -one- person willing to go to the ends of the earth to
support you IF YOU ARE TELLING THE TRUTH.

It was YOU who chose to use the words "News Media" in an earlier posting
(see below).

If you are legitimate...and none of us -should- have any reason to
believe you are not... kindly name the legitimate news organization to
which you belong and provide an address and telephone number. Is that too
much for us to ask?

If you are not willing to do this publicly, it casts a further shadow on
your purported interests.

Dan, please don't underestimate the intelligence or resolve of monitoring
hobbysists.

I have my suspicions Sir, and I feel that you and I have probably had
this go-round before. Please prove me wrong!

OK Dan, it's your turn.............AND WE'RE LISTENING!!

Dear Fellow Monitoring Enthusiasts:

I do not know "Mr. Ferrara". He may indeed be a nice man and run a
legitimate business.

I do however, ask you to -carefully- consider such requests. After
personally investigating several identical postings, I have discovered
them -all- to be SCAMS.

Usually the person has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE NEWS MEDIA. Remember, the
news media relies on wire services and have their press rooms full of
scanners. They are further bolstered by the tremedous support of local
monitoring enthusiasts such as yourselves who further the status of our
hobby by offering tips (where appropriate and legal) without any thought
of compensation.

My investigation has discovered that these "Make Money Listening to Your
Scanner" offers have -no- ties to legitimate news gathering whatsoever.
Rather, they are most often a ruse by unscrupulous Insurance Estimators,
Disaster Cleanup companies and Construction Firms who would seek to abuse
our hobby for their personal gain. They win - we lose!

Just think, would -you- want somebody who gathered information about your
family's calamity under false pretenses ( "for the news media" ) to be
the one who shows up like a vulture at your home to pressure your family
at a vulnerable time? If such a person is unethical in one respect, how
can you rely on their integrity in another?

There are countless Insurance Estimators, Disaster Cleanup firms and
Construction Companies who operate with unparalleled integrity. Any
person in need of such services need look no further than their telephone
directory.

Again, no intentional aspersion is cast towards "Mr Ferrara". I only ask
that you VERY CAREFULLY consider such offers.

Ethics and Integrity are important to our hobby.

(Los Angeles) prefix and he blindly identified himself as being with Entertainment Tonight. He told me that the
producers would be getting in touch with me. I attempted to get information on the story they were working on
and he couldn't tell me much, just wanted to know if I monitor LAPD and Malibu Police. I didn't tell hime that
Mailibu is coverd by LASO. I am leary of what the producers have in mind. If I feel that if the show content
has a typical liberal media taste to it, I'll probably decline to comment. I bet we all have hopes that they
could do a piece on "How I helped the Police capture a criminal by using my scanner".

If you too have been contacted by the show, please don't lend in to the liberal tendencies and "hype" of the
media. I plan on stating the facts and represent the scanner community in a professional matter, because I know
the media loves to make us out to be a bunch of loonies.

They probably just want someone to give them a heads-up whenever there's a
response to a 'map-of-the-stars' address...  I seriously doubt there's a
sinister liberal plot to malign scanner listeners - [that the mainstream
media has anything but a liberal bias is a subject for another group... 8*) ]

Although I do not know Brian or the person who originally posted the initial message in this thread, and in no
way am I casting any aspersions upon either of the two gentlemen involved, I must agree with Brian regarding
the unsavory practice of some *** insurance adjusters, board-up companies, and disaster recovery
companies, who descend upon disaster-affected families in the heat of the moment, when the families are
ill-prepared to make rational decisions regarding such issues as property board-up, clean-up, and damage
assesment offered by such persons who give new meaning to the term "ambulance chasers".  They tend to make the
caricature of the "Johhny-on-the-spot" attorney look like an angel of salvation, by comparison.  I have
witnessed NUMEROUS incidents where such "crews" show up without being called by the property owner, to attempt
to extract a contract from the affected families.  Such services end up being far from the best deal that the
owner could obtain, given the time to recover from the incident, and the opportunity to browse through the
yellow pages.  Although I am only representing myself here, and in no way am writing this in representation of
my organizational affiliation, I felt that another opinion was needed here, from a person with similar
credentials.  I am, and have been, a public information officer for the Orange County Chapter of the American
Red Cross, since 1989.  I am also currently the department chairman for my function (I am a volunteer).  I have
also served the American Red Cross for weeks in the floods of 1993 in the midwest (Iowa, Illinois, Missouri),
and the Northridge earthquake in the San Fernando Valley, and feel qualified to note that many unscrupulous
types always appear on-scene to benefit economically from the tragedy of others.

Anyone offering their monitoring services should clearly identify whether their services are being
solicited by such unsavory types.  Your conscience will then assist you in making an educated decision.

There is nothing more disgusting than to see the owner of a burned-out home, who has just lost
everything, being accosted by one of these vultures.

These opinions, as previously stated, are my own, and do not represent those of the American Red Cross, or the
Orange County Chapter of the same agency.
