Red Wave Radio

I am looking at the IC-706 as a possible mobile rig. I was wondering if
anyone who has/had one would recommend it, or any weakness it has.

See my recent post on this subject. I think the IC-706 is great,
but only 4.5 stars because it does have some faults (no rig is
perfect). Of course no other small radio even approaches 4 stars.
I'm amazed every time I turn the thing on that I get such good
performance out of such a tiny box, and I've had it for quite a
while, one of the first. I would caution that some of the faults
I consider minor, you might consider major. I'm primarily a digital
operator, with some mobile voice activity. If you're a CW op, you
might be less pleased with the radio. And don't expect too much out
of its VHF coverage. There's less there than meets the eye. (Though
figuring out how to improve it was fun.)

IMHO to get a better radio you'd have to spend thousands more, and
accept a much larger box. The ease with which you can tuck this thing
in a mobile is simply unbelieveable. It just disappears even in tiny
interiors.

1: No tuning option !!! (only when original tuner from icom is bought).
2: Not all the filters are included..

Further the unit works great, this is a radio for life..

If you plan on using it for a lot of 2 metre mobile or even base for that
matter you will want to preprogram all your repeater freqs into memory.
Not someting you would want to try while moving.

Also no DTMF for autopatch.  Other than that it's a pretty good rig.
