Source of small footprint Mag-Mount 1/4 wave UHF antenna?

Post by Cliff Yamamo » Tue, 08 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Greetings,

Well the subject mostly says it all.  I don't wish to drill a hole, but
I don't want to use glass-mount either.  I will keep the soap-bar sized
mag-mount Larsen for when I need to mount a longer whip, but for my daily
driving a 1/4 wave UHF "spike" will suffice.

I'm basically looking for a 1/4 wave UHF antenna similar to the NMO style
"spike" but with a small circular magnet glued in where the threads and
center conductor are.  Then a small coax feed coming out the side of the
base of this.

Any leads on something like this would be appreciated.  It seems silly
to have that large soap-bar sized mag-mount base for such a tiny 1/4 wave
antenna.

Thanks & 73's
- Cliff

Cliff:  I got a mini-mag mount (with a BNC connector) at one of the
Ham-Fests (I think it was PACIFICON '94 in Concord, CA).  Ic cost me
$14.95 or so and it works well with my ANLI S-10 1/4 wave antenna.
Notice that this mount has a BNC connector, I don't know it they sell
one with a NMO type.  The mount by the way is about 2.5 inches in
diameter.

Good luck

Remember, a magmount base is one plate of a capacitor (the body being
the other plate) for the purpose of offering a low impedance for RF
at the operating frequency. It's not large for mechanical purposes,
but rather for electrical purposes. If you used a tiny base area,
it'd likely work no better than a on-glass antenna.
