I don't believe your handheld is broken. My TH-F6 is also virtually deaf in
the 1500 KHz-88 Mhz range along with 230 Mhz up (except for the 440 MHz
amateur band and the immediately adjacent business frequencies). I cannot
copy WWV on any of their frequencies and I've only rarely heard traffic in
the 20, 40 or 80 meter ham bands. An external antenna helps but very
little. Also my recent experience at an air show with my HT and a friend's
VX-5 was sorely disappointing. My friend could hear aircraft several miles
away while my HT could only copy them when they were within sight. In
addition, the RF dense environment of the air show effectively shut down my
440 MHz receive while my friend's HT was used on the same repeater with
virtually no intermod. I am not necessarily a Yaesu fan, BTW. I'm simply
stating my experience. YMMV.
