706mk2G volume control

Post by rons.. » Sat, 30 Mar 2002 02:12:42

I have a new 706 mk2G and have just noticed a dead spot in the volume
control. From the control completely counterclock wise to about a turn
1/4" clockwise the control does nothing. After that point the sound
comes on and volume is normal for the setting of the control. Anyone
else notice this. I still have time to return the radio for a new one
but I don't want to drive for 2 hours if this is normal for the 706.
Thanks

Sounds like a typical 706 volume control..

Come to think of it, mine does the same thing. I'd assumed it was because
at theses low volumes (mine puts out zero audio from fully counterclockwise
to somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4) there wasn't enough power to run the
speaker.

I think I'll keep the one I have. Sounds like all do the same thing.
Another thing I observed with mine..
No matter what I do to the friction control on the main tuning knob I
can't keep it from rubbing not allowing the dial to freely turn without
making a rubbing noise.
Don't get me wrong I still love ny 706.

I don't have a 706, but in playing around with another rig brand, I notice if
the RF gain is turned too low, not much happens early in the travel of the AF
gain. You might check your RF gain, and make sure it is high enough.

Hrm.. Mine doesn't have a rubbing noise when turning the tuning knob... It
just spins like it's supposed to.

I am pretty sure the " volume control " is not carrying audio but a
digital signal to a audio attenuator. Most of the products I have seen
using this scheme has a " dead " area in the first few degrees of
turning the volume knob.

Mine doesn't either. It's possible maybe they pressed his on a bit
close to the faceplate.??? I think the knobs just press on and off. I
don't believe there is a lock screw. "I'm not 100% on that though, be
careful!."  Maybe he could just pull it out a hair until it quits
dragging. It might be rubbing on the faceplate plastic a bit. I
thought maybe there was felt behind the knob to kill the friction, but
I'm not sure.?? Maybe the felt is missing??? MK

MK
You were right. The knob was just pushed on too far. I was able to use a
little more force than I tried before to pull the knob out a little. I
am now very happy with my MarkIIG.
