HELP:TM742A TRI-BAND RADIO QUESTIONS

Post by Stephen M. Floy » Thu, 05 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I am considering a purchase of the Kenwood TM-742 Tri-Band radio, with
the intent of configuring it for 2m, 220 MHz, and 440 MHz operation.

Questions are:

Is this a reliable radio; where all three band operations can
confidently be placed.?

Is the RF performance GOOD in High RF city environments?

Can Cross-Band repeat be used on any combination of bands?

Please send any and all comments to my email address:

Thanks for taking the time to send me your experiences with this radio.
I am preparing to purchase this radio.

HELP:TM742A TRI-BAND RADIO QUESTIONS

Steve;

I have a 742 configured in exactly that way and have been using it for
about a year with the Comet CX224 tri-band antenna and triplexer.

The radio has been very reliable - no problems with it at all.

The strong out of band signal handling performance on the 2 meter module
is not outstanding.  I drive through Washington, DC, each day to commute,
and had to add that notch filter advertised in QST to knock out the 152
MHz paging signals.  After that, all is OK.  I think that filter was about
$60.  Plan on purchasing that if you want to keep wideband capability and
operate around paging sites.  I've not had any problems with other
services.

Yes, cross band repeat can be set up for any combination.  Occasionally,
mixing products may cause some degradation in performance, but you won't
know this until you get to a specific setup.  The manual lists some known
combinations of frequencies that are less than optimum.

I've really enjoyed using mine.  I have the display mounted just under my
line of vision on the dash, the controls mounted just above my broadcast
radio, and the modules in the trunk with the triplexer.  Works great.
Email me if you want more info.  73

HELP:TM742A TRI-BAND RADIO QUESTIONS

I currently have two of these,TM-742. I love the radios and they have a
few extra features like the remote control function in crossband from a
TH-79. With that ht in the remote mode all remote functios are just one
button activation. It will do crossband repeat in any combination. I saw
that you could do double crossband from one band to the two others but
don't know how. Anyway I like my two and btw I bought both of them from
this news group.

Have fun 73
