Steve;
I have a 742 configured in exactly that way and have been using it for
about a year with the Comet CX224 tri-band antenna and triplexer.
The radio has been very reliable - no problems with it at all.
The strong out of band signal handling performance on the 2 meter module
is not outstanding. I drive through Washington, DC, each day to commute,
and had to add that notch filter advertised in QST to knock out the 152
MHz paging signals. After that, all is OK. I think that filter was about
$60. Plan on purchasing that if you want to keep wideband capability and
operate around paging sites. I've not had any problems with other
services.
Yes, cross band repeat can be set up for any combination. Occasionally,
mixing products may cause some degradation in performance, but you won't
know this until you get to a specific setup. The manual lists some known
combinations of frequencies that are less than optimum.
I've really enjoyed using mine. I have the display mounted just under my
line of vision on the dash, the controls mounted just above my broadcast
radio, and the modules in the trunk with the triplexer. Works great.
