Can We Limit "For-Sales" and "WTB" In Rec.Equipment?

Post by Gary Pear » Sun, 15 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Hi, rec.radio.amateur.equipment readers,

Please pardon my attempt to become a newsgroup cop, but the newsgroup
rec.radio.amateur.equipment is attracting more and more "for sale" and
"wanted to buy" posts, and I hope I can make an improvement by politely
letting everyone know that this newsgroup is designed for the discussion of
equipment.  There is another newsgroup -- "rec.radio.swap" that is
dedicated to ham radio equipment sales and trading.  (I think because it
doesn't have the title "amateur" in it, some hams might not recognize
rec.radio.swap as an amateur radio newsgroup -- but it is.)

Why worry about this?  Well, it's just much harder to look for subject
lines of interest when you have to wade through the "for sales."

Over the past few weeks, I've sent private mail to many of the hams who
posted "for sale" messages here, with the message printed above.  I've
received many replies, and thankfully none were angry.  Many hams saw so
many "for sales" here that they quite naturally assumed this was the place
to post them.   Traditionally, it is not.  I see some value in returning to
that tradition, since it makes scanning the newsgroup for more-or-less
technical discussion much easier.  It would also make buying and selling
easier, with just one newsgroup to review.

This is a purely a personal message.  I'm not connected with or acting in
any official capacity for the internet, usenet or the newsgroup.  Hopefully
you will not take offense, and if you disagree, please feel free to follow
your own conscience.

73,
Gary KN4AQ

Actually, Gary, there IS a rec.radio.amateur.swap newsgroup! But, no one
is using it except for a few diehards. I can't blame anyone for not
wanting to post on rec.radio.swap because of all of the scanners, CB and
commercial listings. You do have a point about this newsgroup and I will
be sure to post my for sale items elsewhere.

It's rec.radio.swap, actually.  As far as I know, scanners and CB's
fall under the category of "radio", as well.  :-)

My last ISP did not carry rec.radio.amateur.swap, but my current ISP
does. It IS there if your ISP will get it for you.

Sounds like a plan, but would you please post here where you are
selling your stuff along with a description of the item(s) and
price(s) each time you post something for sale ? ;)

Although I don't mind reading the ads (I simply skip clicking on the
subject line if I choose not to read them) there's the following
newsgroups for this sort of activity:

        rec.ham-radio.swap
        rec.radio.amateur.swap
        rec.radio.swap

rec.radio.swap is legitimate, r.r.a.s is bogus.
Some sites carry it anyway.

There is a group called rec.radio amateur.swap
Icheck it almost every day,  but there are very few posts.
I suggest you ask your ISP to add it to their list.

Look at  rec.radio.swap  that is where you will find most of the posts

Please be aware that rec.radio.amateur.swap is a bogus
group, IE it has not been approved as one of the official
groups in the rec.radio hierarchy. For any group in the
usenet big 8, there is a formal group creation process
which should be followed to create a new group. This
process was not followed for this group. Therefore
most usenet admins will not create it on their servers
or handle any traffic for it. The authentic group for
buying, selling, or trading radio equipment is the
rec.radio.swap newsgroup. Please use that for all
your buying and selling.
