Leykis takes a "JAB" at the Sports Babe during "N.A.B."!

Tom Leykis did his National Radio Show from the lobby of the hotel
in L.A. where this years N.A.B. convention was being held. I liked
the fact that he talked about many issues concerning the change in
radio in recent years. He touched apon the subject of Reagan's
deregulation of the industry which brought about people buying
radio station that had no formal training in broadcasting at all.
People who were looking for quick profit and had little concept on
programming. That kind of talk was interesting and he had some
fascinating guests.
However... towards the end of his show on Friday when he came
back from one of his commercial breaks, he mentioned a rude comment
he overheard someone saying about what the "Fabulous Sports Babe"
really looked like. I don't want to say it but it refered to how fat
she is. I thought the comment was uncalled for and many of the "Babes"
many fans started calling in and telling him the same thing. He kept
on saying he didn't say it, that he "was just repeating the comment that
he had heard."
I thought the comment was kind of a "low blow"... forgive the pun. :-)
Many people in the radio business "carry alot of weight around",
(if you know what I mean!) That's why their on the RADIO!
The Sports Babe has a dynamic show and she handles all callers and
guests with a brutal, fast paced, honest method. Everboby in the radio
industry can learn from how she handles a Network Show! It doesn't
matter what she looks like and you don't even have to be a sports fan
to enjoy her show.
I know Tom Leykis reads this newsgroup and I'd like to tell him,
I like the radio issues he brings up, but he could leave oout personal
attacks like this against someone who works at his own Network of
"Westwood One".

Actually, Paul, the reason "their" on the RADIO is because they're
entertaining and do a good job.  How they look or what they weigh is
immaterial.  (It's worth noting that even Rush Limbaugh has a TV show, as
does of course Roseanne Barrnold.)

By the same logic, "good pipes" would be seem to be a requirement for
radio work, but that's not the case either.  If someone makes you want to
listen (and come back for more), THAT'S what carries the "weight"!

Well, the Sports Babe was on ESPN2 with Jim Rome the other night, so I
imagine she's not necessarily interested in CONCEALING her size from the
public-at-large.

I don't know if you were just skimming through my posting, Ron, but
I made the exact same point... that it didn't matter what the Sports Babe
looked like or how much she weighed, that she has a dynamic show and
runs a riveting, fast paced show. It's Tom Leykis you should be complaining
to about this rude comment he repeated on his Network show!
Tom shouldn't even be repeating comments like this... because I hear
that no one could ever nickname him "Slim Tom" (if you get my drift!)
I don't care about his weight either... as long as he keeps talking
about topics that interest me. I also like the fact that Tom is active
on the Internet and speaks his mind publically. I just think there is
no need for such personal attacks!
I hope you won't take a section of this post out of context and
make it look like *I* made another rude comment!

Thanks for taking the time to respond... the subject must have
"weighed heavy on you mind" to provoke you to respond.  ;-)

Paul, you will *never* see Ron Harris make a statement about Tom that is
in any way negative, as Tom doesn't like his employees to do that (Ron
writes Tom's jingles for him, among other duties).
In Tom's own words, he has no compunction about saying whatever pops into
his mind at any given time, as his only goal is ratings. The only subject
he will not discuss on the air is Tom - specifically related to the
criminal charges he faced in Boston last year.
Many broadcasters believe that they have some responsibility to their
audiences, and make some effort to avoid crossing the line into bad taste
and personal attacks. Anyone who has listened to Tom's show a few times
understands that he is not among them.

This does not sound unlike Rush Limbaugh, who once said before the NAB
convention in San Francisco, "It doesn't matter what my politics are,
what matters is ratings."  He was on a talkshow panel with local talker
Ronn Owens and others.  (Owens is on KGO 9-12noon, same time as Rush's
show is carried on KNBR.)  Owens said that politics and show content DO
matter.  So, Rush overtook Owens in the ratings, has burned out, and now
Owens is back on top again.  Apparently, some things DO matter besides
just going for ratings in the short-term.

That's interesting... I did notice that "Ron" came from the California
area, but did not know he worked for Tom. Usually Tom replies to things
himself and doesn't use a "mediator"... I'm surprised he hasn't taken
the time to put his two cents in. Tom is usually quite outspoken on the
Net and doesn't shy away from any issue!

Are those the charges that he "threw his wife into a fireplace"? I heard
this story posted a while back on this newsgroup, but Tom denied it
infatically. He's seems to be very sensitive about the subject and
I would like to know if there is any fact in it. If there is... he has
alot of nerve talking about such issues as the O.J. Simpson / Nicole
(wife abuse) issue, if he treated his own wife like that!

I know Tom "rides the crest of controversy" and believes that it will
give him higher ratings... but if he tries to "surf" over his own personal
past history, he may find himself crashing into the "reaf of reality"!

So like those on the West coast would say..."Surf's Up...Dude!"

I just love "hanging ten" while "surfing the Net"!
