Maybe I *AM* the only listener in Portland of AM stereo?!

Post by Robert Cas » Sun, 25 Sep 1994 17:30:58

I sort of wonder, maybe I am the only listener with an AM stereo radio
(a Sony ARF100 connected to my stereo amp) in this town.  I'll have to
write a letter to KBBT telling them that their AM stereo sounds fine.
Called them some time ago, would you believe the phone receptionist
didn't know about it.  Well, on second thought, maybe not so unbelievable...
I can maybe imagine the scene at the KBBT offices: "Hey, look!  there
really is an AM stereo listener in town!".

Hey Robert:

KBBT is a fine station.  I listen to it all the time.  But did you know
that they are owned by KUFO?   Yes, and KBBT has no live Dee Jay's!
All their material is recorded on reel-to-reel and is played back at a
later date.  But I am sure you are not the only listener around here
with a stereo AM reciever.  They are, however, kinda hard to come by.

AM Stereo Radios are easy to get.  It's the $20,000 carring case that
causes the problem... :)

When we installed the Stereo E***r on the AM station the program
director complained that it was not operating corectley.  After talking
to him he expected that once the staiton was stereo that the AM station
would sound like the FM station down the hall.  I tried to explain it to
him but he was convinced I was lying to him to CYMA.

KBBT and KUFO have always been under common ownership, going back to when
they were KOIN and KOIN-FM.  You mention about all the programming being
recorded reel-to-reel, which frankly amazes me, since usually only the
songs are and the voicetracks are done separately, usually (though not
always) from cart machines.  KBBT is an AM station at a time when AM
music stations aren't doing well, so it doesn't surprise me that they're
not live.  But so what?  For Portland to have a modern rock station at
all you should be thankful.  Heaven knows, it could be another KPDQ.

FWIW ... I've got a Radio Shack AM Stereo Tuner here, probably with
the
original box, if you're looking.

Portables are very easy to find if you go to Japan (or have a friend).
Like the AIWA CR-D60 or Sony SRF-SX100RV walkmans (the latter with
built-in fishing reel headphones)

Actually, it's recorded on 8mm videotape in PCM stereo.  Unfortunately,
the rest of the broadcast chain isn't all that great, so it doesn't
sound as good as it might.

KINK-AM (nee KGW) 620KHz and KEX-AM 1190KHz are also AM-stereo, and both
have much better sound quality, if the programming fits your style...

Also, for those in the Portland area I have spotted the SRF-42 (Sony AMAX
compliant AM-stereo walkman) at G.I. Joe's (local general merchandiser,
for those not in the area).  Previously it had only been spotted at the
"Sony Only" store.
