There not doing that on CW....nice and clean there.  Nor are the on any of
the 'new warc' bands...i.e.  30, 17 and 12 meters.  Open up,  expand your
horizons.

And I've noticed quite a few ordinary QSOs on the contest bands despite the
contest.  There is room for all.

Great chance to log some new countries, especially the low bands where split
freq. operation is the norm.

10m was really hopping earlier.

I like listening to the battle between KC1XX and W3LPL who are usually only a
khz or two apart at the bottom of the phone band all weekend.

I have  342 DXCC countries confirmed and NEVER got a new one during a
contest.

I have been dxing for  40 years, and have heard repeatedly that contest
weekends were a prime time to work "new ones."    It ain't so.   The BEST
time for working new dx is during non-contest times, when the bands aren't
trashed by the contest QRM.

If your countries total is over 250, no, you won't find Albania or Pakistan on.
But if you're still chasing your first 100, heck yeah you'll work some new ones
!!

I've worked plenty of new ones (a tad over 300 total) in contests.

Many of those who are competing against you in the pileups during the
week are busy working garden-variety countries during the contests.
Meanwhile, *** DX sits begging out in the perihipery of the bands.

In this weekend's test, D4 (Cape Verde) is going begging on several
bands.  I worked a SU9 (Egypt) early this morning on 15 on the first
call; no competition.  Meanwhile, all the big guns are slugging it out
on 80 trying to work Japan...

Given the horrible state of pileup behavior, and the instant chaos
begotten by packet cluster, I don't even bother *trying* to work DX in
pileups on phone.  Never even bothered to listen to P5/4L4FN; knew darn
well that unless Ed worked some CW the operator who refuses to call out
of turn doesn't stand a chance.

Strange as it may seem, IMHO contesters are far better behaved.

And you really learn about your station's capability and what areas you
might want to consider improving.  I really need better antennas for the
lower bands (40, 80, and 160).

You also get a lot of experience in the vagaries of radio wave propagation,
learning to deal with fading, static, and other conditions that can make
operating a challenge.

I am on the band 5 days per week and I have found only one 10 m contest once
per month and almost every Tuesday evening there is V/U/sHF Contest. Not
vevery day at all.
All week ends I am at work and that is pity as I like contests.

Very astute of you Dee.  You are what we need in ham radio today.
