Sony ICF SW-77 vs. Grundig Yacht Boy 400

Sony ICF SW-77 vs. Grundig Yacht Boy 400

I actually own both the YB400 and the SW-77.  I can tell you that the
SW-77 will run rings around the YB400.  It also costs more than twice
as much.  Let me give you an example.

I like to listen to Radio Australia on 5995 in the morning while I
prepare for work.  Recently, it has been impossible to receive on the
YB400 because of Radio Cuba on 6000.  The SW-77 handles it with no
problem because of the syncronous dectector.  I have compared both
radios side by side on various bands, and the SW-77 always wins by a
large margine.

My only gripe with the SW-77 is the chugging of the tuning knob.  But I
still feel that it beats the YB-400 tuning.  Don't get me wrong, I love
the YB-400, and use it every day.  The Sony is just better for what you
want.

Best price I've seen is at SMILE Photography advertised in many of the
photography magazines.  Personally, I'd pay the extra money and buy it
from Grove.  That way, you can return it if it doesn't suite your needs.

I am planning to buy a SWR. I am definitely a novice. However, I would
like to

purchase one that would last a while.

After reading all the relevent postings in this newsgourp, I have
narrowed it

down to either Sony ICF SW-77 or Grundig's Yacht Boy 400 (YB400). The
best

price I have found for YB400 is US$200. I am still checking on SW-77
prices.

1) Which one is a better SWR?
2) Where should I call to get a good price?
3) Which one would be able to pick up signals from South-East Asia?

All answers and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The correct comparisons would be between the YB 400 and the Sony 7600 G
(with synchronous detection) or the Sony SW 77 or 2010 vs. the Grundig
Sat 700. Your comparisons would then be size and price compatible.

It would only be the "correct comparison" if that comparison had been
requested.  I don't know about you, but I don't always only consider
products that are a direct comparison.  If I were considering a single
radio, I think I'd like to know how much more radio I would get for
twice the price.  I think that was the nature of the original question.

reading all the relevent postings in this newsgourp, I have narrowed it
down to either Sony ICF SW-77 or Grundig's Yacht Boy 400 (YB400)."  I
believe that Bryce ***

experience with his SW-77 & YB400.

If a person has narrowed down his choices to two disimilar items so be
it.  My last car choice was between an Explorer and a T-Bird Super
Coupe...  Certainly not size compatible, nor compatible on a number of
other items (acceleration, cargo space, antenna mounting space, handling,
etc.  ;-))

I agree with your point that these two radios are certainly dissimilar.
It certainly is an interesting choice of finalists.
