Grundig 650 VS 800???

Post by Robert Lon » Fri, 02 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Just got into this news group and learned about the 800. I have visited
many web pages so I think I know what this radio. I have both a
Satellite 700 and Grundig 650! Has anyone done a side by side of a 650
and 800?? Thanks for the info!!

Grundig 650 VS 800???

The 650's audio would probably be hard to beat.  It's a classic, and I like its
appearance a little more than that of the 800.  That aside, I would think the
800 would be easier to tune, particularly for SSB.  And the 800's sync.
detection is a great advantage.

I may well obtain an 800 in time.  But I will never let go of my 600 (similar,
predecessor to 650).

I used to have the Satellit 650, but now have the Satellit 800.  So I
can't do a side-by-side comparison, but here are my conclusions:
1 - The 650 has the better sound - much more bass response and a more
powerful amp.  The 800 has better treble.  Both sound good, and both
have very clear sound.
2 - The 650 has two bandwidths with 3 bandwidth positions.  The wide
bandwidth is 5.5, the medium is also 5.5 but with frequency filtering
that helps get rid of certain types of interference, and the narrow is
3.0.  The narrow I found to be a little muffled in sound.  The 800 has
three bandwidths:  6.0, 4.0, and 2.3.  The 6.0 and 4.0 both produce
clear sound.  The 2.3 is muffled somewhat when listening to regular SW.
3 - The 800 has an excellent sideband selectable sync detector which
eliminates, or greatly reduces, adjacent station interference.  A BIG
plus.
4 - The 800 has much better dymanic range, and allows extremely weak
signals to be read clearly even though next to a very strong signal.
Using the sync detector, I am sure you will read, loud and clear,
stations that you wouldn't know were there with the 650.
5 - The AGC on the 800 is superior with the FAST - SLOW selection.  The
AGC on my Satellit 650 was too fast when listening to SW programs.
I think you would find the 800 to be a much better performer, but with
less fidelity.
