KBRW-radio station, Barrow, Alaska?

Post by Jorma Manty » Thu, 12 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Hello!
Does anyone know what is going on at Alaska radio station KBRW Barrow
680 kHz?  This station is regularly heard here in Northern Scandinavia
during winter time.  However, since October 15, KBRW was not been heard
on 680 kHz.  Several sources told they have moved to FM.  Now I have
heard that around December 6 the station appeared back on 680 kHz
and is again heard in Scandinavia.

What is going on there in Barrow?

Hi Jorma,

The KBRW transmitter building had a very bad fire in mid October and
was off the air until a few days ago. The continued transmitting on
their FM channel, and made a super human effort to get replacement
equipment and back up and running.

I'll let Don Rinker, the station manager, know that you missed them!

Don

well, they had a fire about a year ago.  maybe they were in the
process of rebuilding, and had to shut down the AM xmitter
temporarily.

you folks should send them a listener report so they know that you can
receive them...

I notice Mr. Harris has a wonderful web page! Probably the best I've
seen on Alaska ... including the state's own.

It was curious to see the Hawaii Nation link there though!? But no
AIP link!? Wonder what the logic there is?

Thanks for info!  I really missed them, as well as several other
Scandinavian dx'ers.  KBRW 680 kHz is/was actually the most often
heard North American station on AM and it is the easiest way to hear
NPR's "Morning Edition" here in the Arctic (I live in Tornio, close to
the Arctic circle in Finland).  This news program is very different if
compared with the thin headline news of commercial broadcasters.

The AM transmitter and building burned down in mid-october.  i don't know if
they ever figured out what caused it, but the building and transmitter were a
total loss.

They recently added an FM, which they ran a different program on, but they
switched the AM program to the FM over the last couple of months until Nautel
could send them a new AM transmitter and they could get it in a new building.

by the way, i work for KNOM radio in Nome (780 Khz).  Have you ever picked us
up?
