I wonder about who will take over, and if one of the rebels does, what kind
of politics he espouses. We don't need another Cuba.

Potentially another country that the US may end up helping, read sending
troops.  The problem is when these individuals want to spill their trashing
of their country into others. It's not like I am against helping others, but
jeesh it seems like some of these countries don't even try to help
themselfs.

Jim, I have to disagree a little with you there. The citizens of Haiti
*have* helped themselves greatly by not sitting on their duffs and rebelling
against a corrupt government. They have succeeded in overthrowing Aristide
without too much outside intervention. Granted, Haiti will likely need some
outside help to regain order.

This is a situation where they will need massive financial assistance from
the international community, otherwise the situtation is never going to
stabilise. I don't know what there natural resources are, but there has to
be something in which they could excel. Agricultural exports comes to mind.
Assembly of electronics or other industrial goods as well - its not like
they have such a high labor overhead <S>. Almost anything might flourish if
someone with vision were to locate there and invest for the long haul.

How about another Panama? Apparently the rebel leaders are disgruntled
ex police who were trained together in Ecuador, they're called "the
Latinos" by the populace. As you'd expect, they have strong ties to the
narcotraficantes.
