Red Wave Radio

I've seen postings several times about DX-380 and DX-390 radios with
blown front end transistors because an external antenna was connected.

Will a 8V or 22V or maybe a 150-300V MOV across the antenna and group
clamp any ESD events from going into the radio and killing the front
end?

I've got a 380 that I am happy with so far, but I have not connected
an external antenna yet and am kind of wary about doing that.

What thinks the net?

I think they are cheap, low quality radios and hence the problem.  Maybe try a
reputible brand and a quality radio.
