Tandy UK / Radio Shack

Tandy UK / Radio Shack

Post by James Roc » Fri, 15 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I went into Tandy's today, just a general scout around for SW
radios.  They are no longer owned by Radio Shack, but have been
taken over by Cellphone Warehouse a UK company.  So no more Radio
Shack stock lines.

I got the distinct impression that within a year all the radio
kit will be phased out.  They had a miserable selection anyhow.

Yet another shop goes the way of cellphones.  The high-streets
seem to be crawling with them now.  This is getting very boring
for the UK consumer.

Looks like they will go the way Heathkit went. First Heathkit cut down on
the amateur radio line then slowly phased everything else out and became
basically a Heath/Zenith Computer store. Well, they went out of business
altogether a few years later :( That really was shame ! They shouldve just
stuck to the amateur/swl market and mail order only. I really miss browsing
the heathkit catalog to see what's new.

Don't you remember the MASSIVE SW and Scanner sell off about 8 months ago?

If that does happen I'm sure all those who trashed Radio Shack at every
opportunity will then revert to how tragic it is to lose Radio Shack.

Radio Shack is one of the best things to happen to the hobbyist,in spite
of their sometimes clerks-without-a-clue.

Very sad indeed...and not only for uk consumers. My local caf
is selling them as well as my fishing shop, and my grocery...
A right plague.
BTW could someone recommend a good SWL /scanner stuff
shop in London? I couldn't find anything outside Tottenham Court
Road...I know there are plenty of good companies to order from
but direct contact and chatting are so more fun..;-)

Well there is Maplin Electronics in King St, Hammersmith.  I'll
be paying them a visit soon to get industrial NiMH batteries.
Enough of these downrated NiCads!
