Yaesu FRG-100?

Hi Rene

The FRG-100 is an excellent choice. I've had one for over two years
and I'm really pleased with it. I also have an Icom R71, and for
SWLing the FRoG is every bit as good as the Icom. It's great on SSB
and CW, but I'm mostly a broadcast listener. I don't miss having a
synch really, as it works really well if you tune AM broadcasts in USB
or LSB mode. Although it has no keypad, it's really user-friendly.

Cheers

Andy

AFAIK: Very good for SSB, earlier versions had bad AM filters. These
were improved l8r (FRG-100B I think?). Keypad only as a 3rd party
product. May not ship with power supply.
Google Groups and the usual review sites will probably spit out some
more info.

It's an excellent performer.  Wait a few weeks and you might see some
discounting of prices as we go into Dayton hamfest season.  Of if you
can find a nice used one even better.

If the lack of a keypad bothers you, maybe look at the Icom R-75.
I've had these 2 radios side by side .for several months and found the
"receive power" to be about the same.  Features and audio are
different.

As for the wife friendly antenna - random length of #18 wire out the
window and up the nearest tree.  Or running the full length of the
attic.  Or laid along the top ridge of the roof.  Not very visible.
Produces good results.  The higher and longer the better.

Past that, look up some frequency swapping sites.  QTH.NET has some
shortwave "reflectors" you can subscribe to and swap frequencies with
fellow listeners.  Also Monitoring Times has a site with hot freqs
listed.

It's a great hobby - have fun.

Thanks for all your replies!

What type of Antenna is recommended for use with this set that is not
too large? Also would be interesting to hear what type of antenna other
people with this set are using.

Finally, are there any internet site where this can be bought?
