Picking Up BBC In New England in Evening: Suggestions Requested, Please ?

Post by Robert1 » Wed, 25 Feb 2004 21:48:43

Hello:

New at this.

Might anyone please suggest some frequencies that it "might" be possible
to pick up the BBC direct from England on ?

Live outside of Boston, and would like to listen between, e.g., 7 and 11 PM
(Boston time).

Thanks,
Bob

Do you mean LF, MF or HF? On LF (198kHz) you get BBC Radio 4 (talk).

On MF, you get BBC Radio 5 (sports) on 693 and 909 kHz and also the low-
powered local radio stations.

You also get BBC World Service on 648kHz which may be receivable.

There are dozens of BBC World Service frequencies on HF.

All of the other stations are FM only or digital (DAB/DVB/Satellite) only.

See http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/radio_transmitters/ for transmitters and
power. All the stations are available on the Internet (Real Player) at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ - so you can identify what you might receive.

This includes the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland services (and the
Welsh language and Scots Gaelic transmissions).

BBC news and features were received *very strong* in upstate New
York between 10:20 pm and 12:15 am last night and this morning in the 31
meter band. Find WWV at 10.000 Mhz and tune downband.

I use 5.975 in Western Mass. from 5 or 6 PM until midnight.  Comes through
clearly on even cheap shortwave radios.

In the evenings, 6135 and 6005 are other stations I hear the BBC on.
I pick up the BBC in late afternoon on the west coast on 15400.  Sorry
I don't have times.

I have an even easier way for you to listen to BBC World Service (which is
what I assume you are inquiring about).

Do you have a TV and/or a VCR with a SAP switch? (that's "second audio
program").

If so, just tune to the Boston PBS station, WGBH (Channel 2). They carry BBC
World Service 24 hours a day on their SAP channel!
