Robert:
The download results in about 5 different install packages.  The ReadMe file
doesn't give any guidance on how to install (which install to use).  Can you
help?
Thanks.

Logging Software - Shortwave Log 3.05 released

Brian,

SETUP.EXE works for all flavors of Windows.

Shortwave_Log_v3.msi is the real setup program.  All SETUP.EXE does is call
this file.  MSI stands for Microsoft Installer.  MSI files are read by the
Microsoft Installer and eliminate the need for a separate SETUP.EXE file.

If you have the Microsoft Installer on your system, you can just
double-click on the MSI file.  If you don't have the Microsoft Installer,
then Windows will just give you a strange "I'm confused" error message.

The trouble is that not every flavor of Windows has the Microsoft Installer,
hence the need for SETUP.EXE for legacy systems.  I used to distribute only
the MSI file, but it confused too many people.  Now I have the other end of
the spectrum where I end up distributing four setups!

Before you even attempt to run setup or double-click on the MSI file, please
read the Read_Me_First file.  The .NET Framework and possibly a database
update or two will need to be downloaded from Microsoft before you can
install Shortwave Log.

If you are running Windows XP and if you are current with all the Windows
Updates, you have nothing to do - just install!  If you're running anything
else, you'll need to download and install the files listed in the
Read_Me_First file.

If you try to install Shortwave Log and you do not have the .NET Framework
installed, the install will simply abort.  If you are running a pre-XP
version of Windows and you do not download the database updates listed in
the Read_Me_First file, the program will install but will crash when you try
to launch it.

Please let me know if you run into any problems.  I've noticed that
Microsoft has moved things around on their web sites, making it harder to
find the .NET Framework to download.  Since things are near-seamless for XP,
I guess it's a deliberate attempt to nudge people toward XP instead of
98/2000.

To summarize:

1.  Download the .NET Framework from Microsoft if you don't already have it
installed.
2.  See the Read_Me_First to determine if any low-level database updates are
required.  If so, download and install these from Microsoft.  (The links are
in the Read_Me_First file.)
3.  Run SETUP.EXE or double-click on the Shortwave_Log_v3.msi file.
