I am planning on purchasing a Grundig YachtBoy 400, after having also
considered the Realistic model of similar price (39?). Is this the right
decision? After hearing of the Realistic's problem with static blowing out
the ext. antenna transistors, I really started to lean toward the more
compact Grundig. It seems like a solid little unit, though, and a lot of
people here seem to like it. I just want a little reinforcement of my
decision--call me insecure. :)

Any peculiarities of the YB400, or merits? Anything I'll be missing by
choosing the Grundig over the Realistic? Any input would be greatly
appreciated.

I got a YachtBoy 400 last October. It's my second shortwave radio (I had
a cheap Realistic before). I'm not an radio expert, but I really enjoy
listening to the YB 400. The direct digital input keypad is great! I
like the 40 station memory capacity - saving my favorite frequencies. I
read in the "1996 Passport to World Band Radio" that YB 400 is an
"unusually good value" with audio quality "clearly tops in size
category." The disadvantages are "circuit noise ('hiss') can be slightly
intrusive with weak signals, no AC adaptor included, and no tuning knob."
They say it works great in Europe and Eastern U.S. The new YB 305 ($150)
is supposed to work better in the central and western parts of North
America.

You'll be missing synchronous detection if you choose the YB 400 over the
Sony 7600 G.

I wasn't aware that Radio Shack/Realistic was making Sony product.

Huh? I merely mentioned a Sony alternative. Sangean had been making the
Radio Shack/Realistic line. Do they still do?Just believe that in the
under $200 price range a person should also strongly consider the Sony
7600 G because it has synchronous detection.
