Kenwood R-5000 computer interface

Greetings all:

After having my R-5000 for close to 10 years now, I have purchased the
IF232C interface and the assorted internal interface chips.  To make a
story short, I still cant get it to play using SCANCAT.  I can see
RS-232 pulses on a RS232 LED monitor tied to the IF2323C, but the
radio does not respond.

Kenwood has a Service bulletin ASB-0919 for the R-5000 that says to
replace IC52 on the control unit, a 27128 EPROM  which is now changed
to a 27C128 EPROM on radios w/ serial numbers below 804xxxx.  I have a
radio w/ serial number 00070xxx.  Kenwood says my radio is newer.

How to you read the Serial number?

Why (or HOW) does this chip replacement fix the problem?  (It appears
that the fix replaces a TTL level chip w/ a CMOS chip).
